Toyota officially the top-selling automaker in the US

We know we’re biased here at Toyota of Clermont, but we also know that Toyota is one of the best (ok, who are we kidding, THE best) automotive brands out there. And it looks like we’re not the only ones who think so – for the first time in 90 years, Toyota has officially become the top-selling automaker in the United States. It’s not an accolade to take lightly, and it definitely points to the fact that drivers love our brand.

Toyota bumps GM from number one spot

How did it happen? Basically, GM has been the top-selling automaker in America every single year since 1931 – talk about a winning streak. However, Toyota threw a wrench into their long-claimed victory this year by coming out on top for the first time in 90 years. Here are the details:

In 2021, Toyota sold 2.3 million cars in America, which was a 10.4% increase from the year 2020. Keep in mind, this is all with the insane semi-conductor chip shortages, factory and plant shutdowns, and low inventory, too.

• In 2021, GM sold 2.2 million cars in America, which was a 12.9% decrease from the year 2020.
• Sales of both cars and trucks were up last year for Toyota. Alternative fuel cars (like hybrid cars) sales totaled 600,000, a whopping 73% increase from the previous year. Additionally, the Toyota Tacoma sold 5.7% more units than in 2020.
• Top-selling models included the Toyota Corolla, Toyota Camry, Toyota Highlander, and Toyota Tacoma (all of which are extremely popular options at Toyota of Clermont).
