A few weeks ago, we got the sad news that Toyota is officially retiring the iconic Toyota Land Cruiser (we're still devastated, tbh). However, this week we got some interesting and possibly good news - Toyota has trademarked a new SUV name that could possibly fill the hole that the Toyota Land Cruiser is leaving in the market. According to rumors, Toyota trademarked the name "Grand Highlander" and we're taking a deeper look at what this new development could mean for drivers. Will this new Toyota replace the Toyota Land Cruiser? As noted, the Clermont Toyota Land Cruiser is going to be put out to pasture after 2021. It's definitely had its day in the sun and Toyota is giving it one more year on the market before retiring it. The good news is that the 2021 model will lose the heavy V8 engine and feature a new V6 that's sporty and powerful. You'll also still be able to get your hands on the Heritage Edition, a limited-run model, and this year it'll offer three rows of seating instead of two (like the prior model). However, after 2021 you won't be able to drive home this iconic SUV (at least not here in the U.S.). That's why we're intrigued about the "Grand Highlander" trademark. Like we said, retiring the Toyota Land Cruiser is leaving a gap in their large SUV lineup. Could the Grand Highlander be Toyota's solution to the said hole? Here's what we think. If the Grand Highlander were introduced to the U.S. market, it could offer a larger alternative to the current Clermont Toyota Highlander. We love the current model - don't misunderstand us - but it's definitely a mid-size SUV. While it offers three rows of seating, the third row can be a bit cramped if you're back there for a long time. And if you put the third row to use, you cut down on your cargo space pretty significantly. What will the Grand Highlander look like? If Toyota were to design and produce a Grand Highlander, we imagine that it would be a larger and more spacious version of the current Clermont Toyota model. This would mean a redesigned back end for a more comfortable third row of passenger seats as well as a larger cargo area, even with the third row up. However, we think it would likely remain on the TNGA-K platform just like its sibling, and would probably boast the V6 engine that's going to be placed in the Land Cruiser for a powerful and sporty performance. It may even offer a hybrid option just like the current Toyota Highlander. We think - fingers crossed - it'll be similar to the current Lexus LX in terms of features, space, and performance. Bidding Farewell to a True Legend What began as a military vehicle meant to tackle any number of terrain types has evolved repeatedly with an uncountable number of features in its catalog. The Clermont Toyota Land Cruiser has been a main staple of Toyota's lineup for decades and is hailed as one of the longest production nameplates out there. This Toyota SUV has always enjoyed a sustained popularity and there's never been doubt of its capability after all these years. However, supreme capability and history can't save the Toyota Land Cruiser from it's inevitable retirement. So, what happened? Why is Toyota retiring this Clermont classic? The answer lies mostly with drivers. Old Dog, New Tricks The truth behind the Land Cruiser's retirement may lie in it's lack of overall sales figures. In fact, the Cruiser only sold a dismal 3,536 units in 2019 and then the Coronavirus arrived and shook the automotive industry to its core. The Cruiser has become more of a niche ride as opposed to the mainstream powerhouse Toyota was hoping for. This is likely due to a few reasons: The Clermont Toyota Land Cruiser has been stagnant in its current 200 Series since 2008 and little has changed. This removes much incentive for many prospective drivers to get behind the wheel. Its price point is exceedingly high. The Cruiser, when all is said and done, can cost one around $90,ooo. This high of a price point commands many options and there are many drivers out there who would rather pay for something a little more luxurious in comparison. The engineering hasn't adapted either. Currently, the Cruiser borrows its 5.7L V8 engine from the Tundra and hasn't changed it once throughout its current generation. Consequently the Clermont Toyota Land Cruiser only reaps 14 combined mpg and burns gas faster than a match to lighter fluid. Yes, the Land Cruiser carries a legendary nameplate and historical adaptability, but it's time has come. But, there's a bit of a silver-lining. The Clermont Toyota Land Cruiser will continue to thrive in other global markets and it's Lexus counterpart, the LX, will continue to be sold in North America. There's also speculation that the Cruiser nameplate will be revived after a brief hibernation, much like the Venza did. Solid state car batteries have been in talks for several years now. Electric cars are true wonders of the automotive world but they do come with several drawbacks. Mainly, gradual degradation, loss of charge, long charge times, and more. The technology has vastly improved since the days of the RAV4 EV, but we still have a ways to go. Toyota believes the future, and it's long-term investment in Clermont EVs, lies in the solid state car battery. What makes this technology so special and how did it come to be? Toyota is planning on producing a prototype solid-state battery by 2021. The large claim regarding these Clermont car batteries is that they can reach a full charge in 10 minutes, have larger range sizes, hold charges better, and more. Toyota has partnered with Panasonic to make the solid state car battery a reality. The initial European EV teased last week likely won't have this technology available, but it could when it makes its way to North America. Toyota is on track to limitedly manufacture the batteries by 2025. The solid state car battery is seen as a figurative "holy grail" in the world of EVs and as the technological puzzle piece that will inspire widespread adoption of the car type. While this image sounds amazing and we'd love to have this technology here at Toyota of Clermont, solid state batteries aren't without their limitations. In fact, the solid state car battery, while having a long life and charge span, has been plagued by failure after repeated charging. Lithium-ion batteries, the technology we currently use for almost anything that runs on batteries, has been worked for several years and is reliable. Solid state technology still has some hurdles to jump over before it can be used widely. Toyota must not only perfect this error in the technology, they must also bring it to a wider production range. As new vehicles are produced and prepared to hit the market, they're put through a variety of tests and simulations. This is done to make sure that the these vehicles are safe for drivers to pilot. Tests on vehicles assess the efficacy of their safety features, how they perform in a variety of accidents, if their failsafes work, and so on. Testing vehicles is of utmost important during the production process and every test is designed to test a specific something on the vehicle in question. One particular test that is all parts entertaining and practical is the evasive maneuver test or commonly known as the moose test. Whether or not you've heard of it, Toyota of Clermont is here to give you a run down of what this test entails and how Toyota vehicles have performed. Look Out! A Moose Test! The moose test is truly unique in that it's practically unorthodox. Many new Clermont Toyota vehicles undergo crashing and rollover tests to ensure their safety and reliability in certain situations. For this road test, cones are placed in a S shaped pattern with a sudden left turn and a straight-away bookending either segment of the test. This test is made to simulate an object suddenly and unexpectedly obstructing your path forward. The driver must know to swerve out of the way and then regain control of the vehicle after the object has been avoided. For many vehicles, this test is rather difficult and often leads to automotive manufacturers reconsidering the efficacy of their Clermont safety systems. Vehicles in the test typically travel around 40 - 50 mph when conducting the maneuver. One of the most notable moose test failures was in 1997 with a Mercedes A Class. This luxury car was thought to be able to pass the test with flying colors but actually overturned during the maneuver segment. It was beat out by an economy (and often ridiculed) German Trabant. The brand new Toyota RAV4 Prime, a much heavier vehicle, recently performed the moose test and failed miserably. In fact, the driver's side tire and wheel separated briefly during the turn. Toyota has commented and said they will rectify the issue and update necessary safety features on future productions of the Clermont Toyota RAv4 Prime. The Toyota Supra was a surprise pass, but it did take a few attempts to get it right. And there you have it! Luckily, driving in North America (for the most part) moose don't often wander onto busy roadways. But, you should always be prepared for anything when you're behind the wheel. The questions are when and what will it look like? More than likely, the Toyota 86 will come equipped with additional power in the engineering department, significant design updates to the interior and exterior, new suspension, and likely a different price tag. Ideally, Toyota plans to allow Toyota Motor Corp employees, retired couples, retailers, visiting scientists, and industry partners to take up residence in the city. That might all change with the release of the second generation model. Recently, the second generation Toyota Mirai was spotted on practical road tests (in camouflage of course). According to the photos we've seen here at Toyota of Clermont, the Mirai is going to be staying true to its initial designs from the reveal events from last year. With odes to the Camry and Avalon, smoother lines, a lower stance, and premium RWD TNGA platform, this new ride is ready to perform. The new Toyota Mirai will also include updated interior features like: A leather-trimmed interior Qi-wireless charging for your smartphone and other compatible devices A larger touch-screen infotainment interface A 14-speaker JBL sound system And digital instrumentation. While we're impressed with the interior feature upgrades of the new Clermont Toyota Mirai, the performance features are what's really getting us excited. While the previous iteration of the Mirai managed an impressive 312-mile range on a full tank of hydrogen fuel, the new generation can achieve 400 miles on a tank. The new Mirai is also equipped with rear-wheel drive which offers superior acceleration and improved handling. The wheel base is also lower and longer to offer enhanced comfort for yourself and passengers. As we said, the new Toyota Mirai is impressive and truly an eye-catching ride. However, we're still not sure if it will arrive to Toyota of Clermont. It’s Time to Say Goodbye to a Legend The Toyota Land Cruiser is one of North America’s longest running nameplates and one of the most original Toyota models on the Clermont lineup. There have been many rumors concerning the next steps for the legendary off-roader. We recently reported rumors that the Toyota Land Cruiser would be ditching the frills and luxury options for something more off-roading centric. While this idea had many fans (and us) thrilled as it likely meant the Land Cruiser would be approaching a more agreeable price point, it seems those hopes and dreams have been quashed. A report from Motor Authority details that an anonymous dealership employee disclosed that the Toyota Land Cruiser would not be renewed for another model year and will not be retuning to Toyota of Clermont in the foreseeable future. This news comes as Toyota unveiled a few new features for the 2021 Land Cruiser and continued the Heritage Edition from the previous model year. But like with all rumors, you should take this news with a grain of salt. The Land Cruiser is one of Toyota’s longest running Clermont nameplates and there are several creative directions they can take with it. This model does still enjoy a substantial following among many off-roading circles. A main downfall of this model is the lack of good sales figures which many attribute to its very high price point. Toyota has not confirmed this report and have not confirmed any forward motion for the Cruiser as of this writing. So, in summation, who knows? This advanced safety technology package includes improvements to pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, and road sign assist. Toyota RAV4 The most beloved Clermont Toyota SUV will be receiving a few key changes for the new Toyota model year. Toyota Highlander Having recently undergone a bottom to top redesign, the Toyota Highlander isn't quite in store for major changes yet.
