Today, we have even more spy material of the upcoming Toyota Land Cruiser, new anti-theft technology for catalytic converters, and the actual truth of Toyota's North American electric vehicle (EV) plan. Let's dive in! Get Ready for Some New Toyota News! Toyota Anti-Theft Tech We're sure you've seen in several headlines for areas around Clermont talking about catalytic converter theft. For those who don't know what those, catalytic converters (catty for short) are auto parts attached to your vehicle's exhaust system to purify what comes out of your tailpipe. For many new Toyota vehicles, these parts are made of precious metals like platinum, rhodium, and palladium. Naturally, these metals are worth a pretty penny when harvested correctly and in larger amounts. Again, naturally, some develop questionable side-hustles and many have found themselves missing their catties. To solve this issue, Toyota has developed a new self-subsidized technology to better track and retrieve stolen catties. In a partnership with a company called Smartwater (not the bottled water, silly), they've produced marking kits that effectively make it easier to track down the precious metal containing catties. Commonly, older models are targeted because they're often outside the bounds of a dealership network and they still contain enough metal in their catalytic converters to make it worth putting up on blocks. Unfortunately, this program is only available in the UK currently. Toyota's Real Plan for North American Electrification Toyota has been a frequently outspoken proponent of pumping the brakes on electrifying the entire automotive industry. Whether or not you agree with the idea that BEVs are the solution to cleaning up the automotive industry's contribution to global emissions, you have to admit that they're hella cool, convenient, and a great alternative to gasoline power. Many major automotive manufacturers are working to make BEVs out of many of their huge nameplates. Toyota released the concept for the bZ4X just a short time ago and many were excited about this upcoming EV. But, Toyota's overall plan is to manufacture more hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles (around 70% of their total sales output in North America) rather than Clermont new Toyota EVs (only about 15% of total sales). It's likely that Toyota will manufacture and allot most of their battery EVs to areas, like California, with more emission restrictions rather than North America as a whole. The New Toyota Land Cruiser is Super Leaky Many are calling it Toyota's worst kept secret and, tbh, that's pretty accurate. But, we're not complaining! If it comes between knowing what's coming next from Toyota and not knowing, we'd take the former every time. Various spy photos of what looks like the upcoming new Toyota Land Cruiser were revealed last week and now we've seen leaked video footage of the vehicle driving and making a right turn! With the new Toyota Land Cruiser being this leaky, it's likely that Toyota will issue a formal announcement for it toward the end of the month. If that happens, you'll be the first to know! Here are some iconic Land Cruiser models you're going to wish would make their way this side of the globe: Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series - South Africa, South America, Australia, etc. The 70 Series Clermont Toyota Land Cruiser is an instant classic and you can tell from a first glance. The 70 Series contains two models, the 76 and the 79. For the 76 Toyota Land Cruiser, it sports the boxy body of a typical Cruiser but evokes 80s vibes that we're totally here for. It has a 4.5-liter V8 under the hood and 4x4 drivetrain that makes it a true off-roading beast. Its counterpart, the 79, uses a similar engine but instead of using a wagon body design it adds a truck bed to the mix. Yeah, seriously. Buyers can choose between and single and double cab, depending on the amount of storage space/utility they need, and it still includes 4x4 drivetrain. Toyota Land Cruiser Prado - Japan, Europe, Australia, Asia The Clermont Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is a modern model that closely resembles the 200-Series of North America, but it's known here as the Lexus GX. Recent spy photos we saw here at Toyota of Clermont show a vehicle believed to be a new Toyota Land Cruiser series, but it does look eerily familiar to the Prado and could just be a facelifted version to be released soon. Earlier this week we dropped the news that Toyota has been hard at work patenting a brand-new turbocharged V8 engine. For what, we have no idea. However, we do know that it'll likely go in one Toyota and one Lexus and that it'll be a twin-turbo setup. We've discussed turbocharged engines in the past, but today we're diving a bit deeper into the logistics of a twin-turbo configuration and exactly what that could mean for your drive time. Check it out! How is a twin-turbo different from a turbocharged engine? A turbocharged engine - as you probably already know - is an engine that uses turbine power and forced induction to push extra compressed air into the combustion chamber of the engine. This extra air means that extra fuel also has to be pushed in so the fuel/air ratio can be maintained, the extra fuel burns faster than it would in a normally aspirated engine, and voila - this results in a boost of power to your ride. You won't find this type of engine in any old car, either - it's usually found in sports cars like the Toyota Supra or larger trucks and SUVs. OK, so what's a twin-turbo engine then? Basically, it's exactly what it sounds like. It's when an engine has two turbochargers pushing extra compressed air into the combustion chamber to get the "boost". The turbochargers can be different sizes and can be laid out in different configurations to get the final effect you want. Let's take a look at the three most common types of layouts so you can better understand their benefits. Three types of twin-turbo layouts Parallel twin-turbo engines lay out similarly sized turbochargers in a parallel design. In this setup, each turbocharger gets half of the gases. It's best used in "v" engines (V6 and V8) because then each turbocharger can be assigned to one cylinder bank, which cuts down on the amount of exhaust piping needed for the system. This setup also reduces lag, a common issue in turbocharged vehicles, because it uses two smaller turbochargers instead of just one large one. Sequential twin-turbo engines have two turbochargers, but one is used for low speeds and one (or sometimes, both) is used for high speeds. A problem that you sometimes see in turbocharged cars is that it's difficult to get that boost of power if your RPMs are low. By using a small turbocharger for low speeds and a larger turbocharger for high speeds, this problem is erased. Series twin-turbo engines have the turbochargers set up in a sequence or series. The output from the first turbocharger is then further compressed by the second turbocharger for a serious pressure buildup and a large boost of power. We don't know just yet what Toyota has in store for us with their new turbocharged V8 engine, but hopefully we'll find out soon enough. The Engine Will Likely Go in a Lexus Model Being so wrapped up in Toyota models here at Toyota of Clermont, we often forget about Toyota's luxurious little sibling, Lexus. Toyota's luxury brand is highly sought-after and desirable to drivers everywhere and it's an experimental playground. This is where Toyota plans to develop and patent self-driving technology, after all. This engine, being so overpowered, could be featured in Lexus' F (Flagship) line of performance vehicles in the near future. Yes, this is heavily contradictory to just about everything we've told you about the upcoming Toyota truck, but think about it. Most other automotive brands are expanding their truck lineups to include hybrid and electric versions and decreasing engine sizes in the name of better fuel efficiency. Toyota could be taking a step in the other direction to keep the heavy engine segment alive in the truck world. But, the configuration in the patent, what's known as a Hot-V, is typically featured in luxury and performance vehicles (think Porsche, Cadillac, Aston Martin, etc.). While we're not saying that the Clermont Toyota Tundra is undeserving of a V8 engine like that, it wouldn't make much sense from a financial point. Plus, Toyota confirmed that the truck lineup will be seeing electrification soon. Bringing a powerhouse V8 engine back into the equation wouldn't seem like the right move. The New Toyota Tundra. On a Need to Know Basis The arrival of the new Toyota Tundra has been surrounded by rumors and speculation regarding just about every aspect of it. It hasn't been officially announced and spy shots we've seen have only given us so much to go on. But, we do know a few things and have a few credible rumors to go off of so far. Say Goodbye to That V8 Engine One sticking rumor we've run into quite a bit is that the Clermont new Toyota Tundra is likely going to ditch the 5.7L V8 engine that's been a mainstay under the hood. The Tundra has used its V8 engine for years with little to no adjustments made. While it affords power and a super capable amount of towing (it towed a space shuttle), it does mean that fuel efficiency has taken a huge back seat. Many full-sized pickups out there have been engineered to be capable fuel sippers and Toyota is likely to follow suit soon. Hybrid or EV? Another ongoing rumor is that the new Toyota Tundra could arrive in Clermont with a hybrid or pure electric drivetrain. A great piece of evidence is in the wheels. The current generation Tundra uses 5-lug attached wheels and spy photos of the new model show a 6-lug attachment system. Adding additional lugs most often means that the wheel needs additional strength, ergo more power behind the engine and on the tongue of the tow hitch. A 24-Hour Endurance Race, a Lot of Hydrogen, and a Combustion Engine A dive into Toyota can show you that this automotive manufacturer likes to engage in several extra-curriculars. Racing is one of those things and Toyota does a bang-up job on the track. While it often takes track-ready Toyotas to the raceway, our namesake has combined two polar opposite engineering structures to make a whole new monster. A Clermont new Toyota Corolla Sport has been retrofitted with a turbo-charged 3-cylinder engine (getting GR Yaris vibes, are we?) and it's powered by, wait for it, hydrogen? Toyota will be racing in the 24-hour Super Taikyu race in Fuji and will be using a vehicle powered by combustible hydrogen to do it. But, how can you combust hydrogen like gas? Why not just use fuel-cell technology like in the Clermont new Toyota Mirai? While we can't dive too deep into specifics (we're not engineers), it's possible this is just a engineering exercise by Toyota. Combusting hydrogen in this manner, while feasible and a cool concept, does come with its drawbacks. There's a huge reduction in overall fuel-efficiency and nitrous oxide, a well-known greenhouse gas, is emitted as a result. But, still pretty cool though. Spy Photos of the New Toyota Land Cruiser Emerge Yes, we're still crying here at Toyota of Clermont over the news that the new Toyota Land Cruiser is being retired in North America. The legend may be seemingly dead in this part of the world but globally it will continue to thrive. And who knows, maybe the Land Cruiser will grace our dealership sometime again in the future. For now, we can only look to the fortune of our international friends as they receive variants of this tough-as-nails SUV. However, this is the first time we've ever talked about actually towing another vehicle. Before you hook up, consider these quick points: No one should EVER ride in the car being towed - not even pets. It's not only illegal but also exceptionally dangerous. The car that's doing the towing should be bigger and heavier than the car that's being towed. You'll need more accelerating and braking power in the front to get your vehicle where it's going safely. Be careful HOW you tow. If you're using a flatbed trailer or a tow dolly (a small trailer that lifts the two front tires of the vehicle being pulled off the ground) then you should be good to go as long as you drive carefully. However, if you're using a tow rope or chain, you should only travel very short distances and at very low speeds. Towing this way can be dangerous and isn't suited for main roads or highways. Towing tips from Toyota of Clermont Once you've hitched up and are ready to hit the road, use these tips to tow your car to your final destination as safely as possible. 1. Go slower than usual. You'll want to slow down when you hit the road with a car behind you - you'll need more distance to come to a safe stop with all that extra weight, and traveling at a slower speed will give it to you. 2. Avoid sudden braking. Try not to brake suddenly or hard when you're towing another car behind you. Not only is it really bad for the towing vehicle's brakes, but it also can cause the car being towed to slam into the back of your vehicle. 3. Take turns slow and wide. Make sure that you take your turns slowly and wide - sharp turns can cause the car you're towing to collide with yours or worse. Give yourself plenty of time and space to make it happen. 4. Use your turn signals and mirrors. Toyota has released its first set of news regarding its upcoming electric car and, boy, are we excited! Not only that, but we have some additional news regarding electrification that we know you're going to love hearing. So, without further adieu, let us at Toyota of Clermont take you on a trip through the latest headlines. The News You've All Been Waiting For! Toyota's new electric car concept is one that we're immensely excited to share with you and we can't wait to welcome it here at Toyota of Clermont. This is a huge deal. Toyota is finally entering the BEV game and it's doing so in a big way. Between all the Tesla beef we wondered if we'd ever get to this point. Toyota bZ4X Details Before we get too ahead of ourselves daydreaming about driving this iconic new Toyota electric car, here are some initial details confirmed by Toyota in their press release: The new Clermont Toyota electric car will be called the bZ4X. "bZ" stands for "Beyond Zero," Toyota's new campaign regarding zero emissions. The "4X" could be describing the number of doors or the drivetrain. We're not entirely sure as of this writing. For the bZ4X, AWD will be the standard drivetrain. This new Clermont Toyota electric car will be done in collaboration with Subaru and built on Toyota's new dedicated e-TNGA platform for BEVs. The concept vehicle features unique designs like a long wheelbase, short overhangs, and an open concept interior space. For the 2021 Shanghai Auto Show, the bZ4X model showcased a "yoke" style steering wheel. While we're not sure if this particular feature will make its way to North America, we'd be ecstatic if it did! Toyota will begin production of this model in Japan and China with the goal of beginning sales in 2022. The product details for this Clermont electric car will be revealed at a later date for the U.S. Apart from specific news regarding the amazing-looking bZ4X, Toyota also revealed some additional news that's sure to excite. Toyota is planning on expanding its global lineup to include around 70 electric cars. These will not all be BEVs. This will include various hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and 15 dedicated BEVs. 7 of these 15 BEVs will carry the bZ moniker (Beyond Zero). If you're not sure exactly what MPGe means (it doesn't mean Miles Per Gallon Electricity), let us at Toyota of Clermont explain. MPG is the most common rating given to a vehicle to measure it's fuel consumption over 100 miles of travel. The EPA determines this number by calculating the amount of heat (energy) that's generated by an object at work (the engine). For an internal combustion engine (ICE), it's a standard of 115,000 BTU (British Thermal Units). This metric is translated to determine the amount of electricity an EV must use to produce the same amount of energy. The standard is 33.7 kWh (kilowatt hour). MPGe then tells you how many kWh an EV need travel to travel 100 miles and how that translates to an ICE engine traveling the same distance. Apart from the MPGe, Toyota hybrid Prime vehicles with a specifically rated distance they can travel in EV mode with electricity alone. For the Prius Prime it's 25 miles and the RAV4 Prime is 42. It requires a certain level of finesse if you want to have a safe, efficient drive time AND avoid costly repairs and maintenance on your Clermont Toyota. What you need to know about driving a stick shift car When you drive a car with a manual transmission - i.e., a stick shift - it means that you're actually shifting for the car using a clutch pedal and shifter. If you drive an automatic, the car does all the shifting for you (all you have to do is push the gas and brake pedals). While a manual transmission car might sound more tedious since you have to do the shifting work, it actually has a ton of perks. Stick shift cars tend to be cheaper to buy, more fuel-efficient, and they're definitely more exciting to drive as you have full control over your acceleration and RPMs. However, stick shift cars also allow for more repairs if you damage the clutch, gears, shifter, etc. That's why it's critical that you know how to handle one of these Clermont Toyotas - check out our tips below. Tip #1: Pull the parking brake. When you park your stick shift car, you'll shift it into neutral before you turn it off. This means that your car can roll (you'd be surprised that it'll even roll on a flat surface sometimes). Be sure to pull your parking brake so it doesn't roll out of your parking spot and into another vehicle or building. Tip #2: Always use your clutch pedal. Some even use the clutch pedal to rock their car back and forth at stoplights. However, it's in your best interest to shift into neutral when you're waiting at a light. This will ensure that you avoid damaging your gears and engine over time. Tip #4: Don't fight against your RPMs. You need to work with your RPMs rather than fight them if you want to avoid stalling out, overheating, and damage to your Clermont Toyota's parts. Don't throw your car into a low gear if your RPMs are high - gradually work. your way down. Additionally, if you're in a high gear, don't slam the gas pedal to accelerate quickly (this can cause overheating). Instead, shift to a lower gear and use your gas in combination to speed up.
